VERY IMPORTANT AND URGENT: BCSLUG is being renamed

Dear BLUGies,

I'm sorry, this mail should have reached you all
by 3:00pm today afternoon, but I've got a million
mails in my mailbox that need attention. If you've
been thinking that BLUG has been extraordinarily
active during the last 36 hours, it's been hectic for
Amit, Sriram, Devendra, Yogesh.

To summarize this mail:

1. A few months ago there was a discussion on renaming
BLUG (it's difficult to type BCSLUG, so many people
including me called it BLUG) since Banglore Linux
User's Group is also named the same and many people
were contacting us for the name change.

2. The group started small with different objectives
and now the objectives are vastly different. What
started as a student helpline, is now turned into an
active community producing code, working on projects
and in short, the whole community being much greater
than the sum of its parts.

3. We needed a refreshing mind change. Just as Linus
had once thought of replacing the Linux mascot from a
cute Penguin which portrayed an academic activity to a
more professional deadly-secure operating system, we
thought that BCSLUG has turned into more than just a
student's mailing list where people think complain get
no answers. We're a formidable community out for a
definite cause - to prove that ethics, morals and
principals do not imply a compromise in quality,
professionalism, or money (or vice versa).

4. We are now going to be hosting projects as member's
contributions, promote them, package them, and we
shall have an identity of our own on the web soon.
Just as there are specific website clusters (apache
for instance for all web-based software), our
community may soon be a hub for all local
student-related needs including software (some of
which will be our own indigenous contributions),
syllabus, collaborations, and a jolly good time.

5. A community that is strong, however, not in the
least exclusive or restrictive. While monopolies think
that it is exclusivity or restrictiveness that gives
power, we believe that the real strength is in the
community. So everyone is only too welcome. The more
the merrier.

Based on a recent poll and after parsing through some
mails on the old thread, it was recognised that
"Computer Science GNU/Linux User's Group" was the most
popular choice. In this regard, a new group has been
formed on yahoogroups. You will soon receive an invite
from me to join it.

I sincerely request you to use the pre-approved invite
as far as possible since otherwise around a couple of
hundred members will need manual approval from the
moderators.

As a new and fresh start, you're encouraged to suggest
new objectives, goals, activities as a part of this
community and certainly invite many more people to
join.

The transition may not be entirely without hiccups and
you're requested to tolerate some hurdles on the way.
We're all trying to make sure the transition goes as
smoothly as possible.

There's a lot of pending work like welcome files,
posting rules, moderation rules, website, hosting of
projects, etc. I've been asked to post a lot of
tutorials by Amit on some of the above issues like
hosting projects on Sarovar, using CVS effectively,
etc. This may take some time. You are all, naturally,
encouraged to write these tutorials if possible as
they will help the two most recent projects (the
e-mail server and xwin) to be hosted on a CVS.

Issues like moving current threads on the new mailing
list will have to be ad-hoc. Plus, we'll probably lose
a lot of archives of information.

Once you move to the new list, it may be a while
before moderators post the posting and moderation
rules until which time all posts will definately be
moderated. After that, lets see......

Yours sincerely,
Archis

May the force be with you...........
